Why does a capstone at Khalifa University need a different approach than a regular assignment?
At Khalifa University’s College of Engineering, the capstone sequence runs across two linked courses.
Project Requirements
Students take a real owner's project requirements through every stage a working engineer actually handles: scope definition, budgeting and planning, conceptual design, scheduling, and construction contract administration.
Engineering Standards
This is not a theoretical exercise written in isolation. Students apply engineering standards directly, weighing engineering economics, constructability, environmental requirements, sustainability, and safety the same way a practicing engineer would on a live project.
Industry Evaluation
The capstone concludes with a project competition involving actual construction industry professionals as evaluators.
Presentation Components
Both an oral presentation and a written report are required components, not optional extras.
Assessment Approach
A capstone written purely as an academic essay, without engineering standards applied and without preparation for an oral defense in front of industry evaluators, misses the entire point of how this project gets assessed.
